The objective of the game is to help your character Dirk escape from the dungeon of an evil Count. In every level you'll need to find the key to unlock the exit door, a compass in the bottom corner of the screen points you towards the key, once you have retrieved it, the compass will then point you towards the exit. During your quest there are diamonds to collect for points, a counter on the right of the screen indicates how many diamonds are hidden within each level of the dungeon. You have three lives for each game, the dungeon is full of vampire bats and spiders, and if you touch one of them you lose a life, the game ends if you lose all of your lives or if you unlock the exit. Dastardly Dungeon has 4 different maze sizes to choose from, with 40,000 randomly generated levels available (10,000 for each maze size), there is also an option to pick a specific level to play or have the game randomly choose one for you.

Dastardly Dungeon was created by Ruckage, developed with Fenix for the GP2X console as an entry in the 2007 PDRoms 3.666 competition, the game took second place. The competition was open to most console platforms, and all entries had to be in the 'Game and Watch' style, resembling a one-screen LCD handheld game.

This release comprises of the GP2X version of Dastardly Dungeon along with DCEvolution's version of Chui's Fenix SDL Loader (FSL) from November 2004, edited to exclude the Fenix splash screen and jingle, so the game loads directly.

The Dreamcast Fenix port is not mapped to all GP2X control functions, Dastardly Dungeon has been edited so all the available control options for the GP2X version are now available on Dreamcast. Due to the alterations made to the game for a Dreamcast release, a download for the original GP2X version has been made available (the GP2X Fenix runtime is also included in the download).
